Why Breakfast Matters
School breakfast is a critical educational tool. When children start the day with a healthy meal, they have better attendance, higher test scores, and fewer visits to the school nurse.
However, traditional breakfast models—where students must arrive early to eat in the cafeteria—often fail our kids. Bus delays, late arrivals, and the stigma of being seen as a student who needs help often keep children away from the cafeteria. Currently, New Hampshire is 46th in the nation in school breakfast participation—fewer than half the children who receive free or reduced lunch at school are participating in breakfast—but NH Hunger Solutions is working hard to change that.
Join The NH School Breakfast Challenge
The School Breakfast Challenge is our initiative to make sure no child in New Hampshire goes hungry at school. We help schools move breakfast out of the early-morning cafeteria and into the school day through a model called Breakfast After the Bell.
By using strategies like Grab and Go carts in the hallways or Breakfast in the Classroom, we make nutrition a seamless and inclusive part of the morning for every student.
